This stately 1860s Georgian mansion is among the finest houses in the Niagara region. You could easily pass the day enjoying the 17 acres of vineyards, manicured lawns and gardens, and exploring the breathtaking view of the Niagara River from the adjacent Parkway. But Riverbend’s impressive interior is equally alluring, with a rich history stretching back to some of the region’s earliest settlers. Known locally as “Oaklands” in the mid-1800s, the house became a school and home for the disabled in the early-twentieth century, and had later incarnations as an apartment building and the Afrukhteh Niagara Fine Art Gallery and Museum. In 2002 the property was purchased by the Wiens family. Under their energetic ownership a massive restoration was undertaken, adding modern amenities while carefully recreating the estate’s authentic Georgian splendour.
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
John Wiens and his family have deep roots in Niagara hospitality. For 22 years they owned and operated the Prince of Wales Hotel in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake. During that time they acquired a reputation for providing excellence and value to their guests. After selling the Prince of Wales in 1997, John searched for another opportunity to bring good service at a reasonable price to Niagara visitors.
With the Riverbend Inn, John and Henry have proudly restored a part of Niagara’s built history, while continuing his family’s legacy of excellence in innovation by creating the region’s first country inn situated within a working vineyard. Together with his wife Jill, they will assure you the very best in Riverbend hospitality.
The Riverbend Inn has 21 exquisite guest rooms, all with private baths. Each queen and double-bedded room, or suite, is a spacious haven of eclectic comfort, thematically decorated in rich warm colours from an authentic Georgian palette, and appointed with touches from a discriminating eye. Rooms all have working fireplaces, satellite televisions, and Internet access. Five rooms have private balconies overlooking the vineyards. Some rooms have the original hardwood floors. Two sprawling staircases, each overseen by imposing chandeliers, lead to the upper floors and add to the unequalled ambiance. A conference room for meetings is also available.

The charm of the authentic 1890s salon bar, flanked by marble pillars, and a roaring hearth has made Riverbend a gathering place for locals as well as travelers. Lunch and dinner are served seven days a week year round in the 26-seat dining room, where fresh and creative country cuisine is complemented by an impressive view. In the summer, it is tempting to pass the afternoon sipping estate-bottled vintages on Riverbend’s 40-seat patio, rimmed by the pristine vineyards of Niagara’s wine county.
The Riverbend Inn & Vineyard completed planting it’s vineyards in the spring of 2004. The warming effect of the winds from Lake Ontario, with rich nutrients in the soils which were once the bed of the “ Lake Iroquois” whose shores once reached the Niagara Escarpment. Will allow these grapes to reach optimum ripening in the fall.
Premium wine making varieties were selected for this vineyard including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay adjacent to the inn on the north side by John St. On the west side of the property Vidal plantings are featured while Sauvignon Blanc was planted to the south of the Inn for maximum sun exposure.
