Chateau des Charmes Wines2. Château des Charmes

Château des Charmes was founded in 1978 by Paul Bosc, a fifth generation French winegrower. Paul and his young family arrived in Niagara in the 1960’s with the idea that growing our own grapes was the best way to make fine wine. More than ever, we believe in this Estate Winery model and we make our wine only from grapes we’ve grown ourselves.

We believe we are custodians of the land. From the beginning we have been committed to using sustainable practices and are charter members of Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario. Paul and his team are meticulous. They use modern science and a lot of TLC to coax the best out of every vine. And with more than 30 vintages in our vineyards we think we now know which varieties grow best in which spot. But there is always more to learn. We believe our groundbreaking research with unique grape varieties will blaze a trail to the future of our industry.

Reif Estate Winery Niagara on the Lake Wineries 34. Reif Estate Winery

The style of wine making has been used by the Reif family since they were working in a wine making town in Germany. In 1977 the first parcel of land was purchased by the founder of the estate winery Ewald Reif. By 1983 the Reif Estate Winery had it’s own 125 acre vineyard and was an established winery located along the Niagara River. Some of Niagara’s oldest vineyard blocks are located on the sub-appellation of the Niagara River. The vineyard plants only vitis vinifera varieties and all Ontario Wines are within VQA standards and are made with 100% Ontario Grapes. This winery is the home of many great wine making and sensory tours along with wedding options.

Their wines reflect the maturity and unique terroir of the Reif vineyard. The wines produced with grapes harvested from their oldest vineyard blocks can be savoured in their First Growth Collection. The winery also has a history of producing great icewines with the first batch of Vidal Icewine coming out in 1984. With more than 100 Gold Awards since then, Reif’s icewines are considered to be some of the best in the Niagara region.

Stratus Vineyards niagara on the lake wineries 215. Stratus

Located in the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Stratus Vineyards is a gravity flow winery, distinguished by its LEED-certified facility, its commitment to sustainability and wines of outstanding quality.

The winery, like our signature assemblage wines, is a composition – a whole greater than the sum of its parts. On their own, the individual elements are distinctly unique – a diversely planted vineyard with unusually rich soil; a sustainable facility that unites tradition and science to serve the winemaker’s art; and a retail gallery with adjoining tasting rooms that are both chic and welcoming. Working together, they create wines and experiences that are truly memorable.

6. The Good Earth

Known as The Good Earth, because total-laid-back, farm-to-table, culinary-destination-awesomeness was just too long to be a catchy handle. With good food, good wine, and good people, this picture perfect orchard-farm setting boasts a gourmet cooking school, order ahead picnic baskets, a bistro, wine bar, stone oven, plein air painting courses and a rustic patio overlooking the vineyard, orchard and garden. It’s a welcoming experience designed to be savoured.

The menu is constantly evolving and features seasonal ingredients.  The Thai shrimp and lobster burger is sumptuous. Charcuterie and cheese plates satisfy wine tasters needing a quick pick me up to fuel more Beamsville Bench tastings.  For dessert, the Puff with Chantilly and Strawberry and Rhubarb Compote is in perfect harmony; light as air Chantilly with fruit fresh from the farm.  Everything at the Good Earth just feels good, even Basel, the cat who curls at your feet.

7. Jackson Triggs Niagara Estate Winery

Established in 2001, the Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery is one of the most technologically advanced wine making facilities in Canada and employs a gravity-flow assisted system of wine making that eliminates pumping that could potentially harm the young wines.

With an emphasis on crafting super and ultra premium VQA wines, the 11.5 acres adjacent to the winery were planted with only the finest vinifera clones and rootstocks, custom grafted in France. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah are the most widely grown in the Delaine Vineyard, while white varietals like Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Sémillon round out the plantings. In addition to providing grapes for the ultra-premium Jackson-Triggs Delaine Vineyard label, the vineyard also serves as a research centre dedicated to maximizing fruit quality by tracking the impact of different clone and rootstock combinations, pruning techniques, soils and climatic conditions on the range of grape varietals.

Diamond Estates Winery

Diamond Estates Winery

8. Diamond Estate Winery

Just outside of Niagara-on-the-Lake lies a 12-hectare vineyard and production facility which is home to Diamond Estates – The Winery. Diamond Estates produces such well known brands as 20 Bees, Dan Aykroyd Wines, FRESH Wines, Lakeview Cellars and Sundance Wines.  The wine boutique offers wine sampling along with a wide array of wine accessories and unique gifts ideas.

About 20 Bees

The original winery on the Diamond Estates Winery property was 20 Bees Winery. 20 Bees is now a part of the Diamond Estates wine and spirit family.

In 2004, a group of the region’s finest grape growers gathered to make plans for their own winery under the brand Niagara Vintners Inc. They wanted to ensure a market for their grapes and to benefit directly from wine sales. Between them, the Bees and their families had over three centuries of experience in the winemaking business. Their vines and grapes are recognized as being among the finest in the region.

They launched their 20 Bees Wine in August 2006. In February 2008 the ambitious plans came to a hault for the local growers when they went into receivership. In retrospect they feel that they became too large too quickly, and were not able to deal with the high costs of the startup.

Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits Ltd., the award-winning wine and spirits distribution and marketing agency company, acquired 20 Bees Winery in July 2008.

Hours of Operation

Konzelmann Estate Winery9. Konzelmann Estate Winery

A number of different mesoclimates exist within the Niagara-on-the-lake terroir, all influenced by the landscape. In viticulture, subtle climatic differences, even those within a single vineyard, can have tremendous influence on growing conditions and ultimately on the flavour of the grapes and the wine. Winemakers pay careful attention to these variables and understand what role the climate will play in their vineyards.

In 1984, fourth generation winemaker Herbert Konzelmann arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake, from Stuttgart Germany, with a design to establish a Canadian winery under the family banner. The single greatest factor in his selecting Niagara-on-the-Lake and specifically the shore of Lake Ontario, was a mesoclimate perfectly suited to Konzelmann wines.

Because it is so large and deep, Lake Ontario has a moderating effect on vineyard temperatures near the shore. The growing season is prolonged, often well into autumn, allowing the grape to mature and develop a more constant natural sugar level. The additional moisture and most notably the morning mists and heavy dew in the lakeshore vineyards, give Konzelmann wines a uniquely delicate and fruity character.

Trius, Peller Estates, Jackson-Triggs and Frogs Pond are 4 wineries that are kid friendly. Frog Ponds is probably the one they will enjoy the most as it has an animal farm in the back.
