RESTORING BEAUTY
This stately 1860s Georgian mansion is among the finest houses in the Niagara region. You could easily pass the day enjoying the 17 acres of vineyards, manicured lawns and gardens, and exploring the breathtaking view of the Niagara River from the adjacent Parkway. But Riverbend’s impressive interior is equally alluring, with a rich history stretching back to some of the region’s earliest settlers. Known locally as “Oaklands” in the mid-1800s, the house became a school and home for the disabled in the early-twentieth century, and had later incarnations as an apartment building and the Afrukhteh Niagara Fine Art Gallery and Museum. In 2002 the property was purchased by the Wiens family. Under their energetic ownership a massive restoration was undertaken, adding modern amenities while carefully recreating the estate’s authentic Georgian splendour.
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
John Wiens and his family have deep roots in Niagara hospitality. For 22 years they owned and operated the Prince of Wales Hotel in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake. During that time they acquired a reputation for providing excellence and value to their guests. After selling the Prince of Wales in 1997, John searched for another opportunity to bring good service at a reasonable price to Niagara visitors.
With the Riverbend Inn, John and Henry have proudly restored a part of Niagara’s built history, while continuing his family’s legacy of excellence in innovation by creating the region’s first country inn situated within a working vineyard. Together with his wife Jill, they will assure you the very best in Riverbend hospitality.

The Riverbend Inn & Vineyard completed planting it’s vineyards in the spring of 2004. A total of 12 acres were planted at the corner of the Niagara River Parkway and John St. located in the heart of the Niagara Wine Country. The warming effect of the winds from Lake Ontario, with rich nutrients in the soils which were once the bed of the “ Lake Iroquois” whose shores once reached the Niagara Escarpment.
