Woodbourne History
The Woodbourne House – meaning woodstream and named after the Four Mile Creek which bubbles nearby, has been fully restored and is a historical gem in the Niagara-on-the-Lake community. The contrast of Victorian & Georgian era architecture is still visible today at the Inn at the corner of Four Mile Creek and Warner roads. The passage of time has brought many changes to this property, the Woodruff family owned the title deed for 175 years. Now it has been rejunvineated and is open to the public!
“Part of the legacy of Woodbourne is recalling the old stories, including the one about William Lyon Mackenzie, the mid-1800s reformer who led the Rebellion of 1837 against the Family Compact. After fleeing Toronto, he was hidden at Woodbourne and then narrowly escaped detection by climbing out a second-storey window and down a massive horse chestnut tree.”
