Why Visit Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara on the Lake is situated about 20 minutes from the Falls and is quite close to Niagara Falls airport. We have visited the area with elderly relatives and friends during the peak tourist season. We preferred not to stay preferred not to stay in the crowded Niagara Falls area, but to remain close enough to visit. Niagara on the Lake was a wonderful option to consider. This 19th century style village features everything you need for a relaxing Niagara Falls getaway including world famous excellent restaurants and charming inns. If you are looking for a romantic weekend getaway, be sure to consider one of the historic bed and breakfast places nearby.

While there, make sure you take a stroll down Queen Street. This is the main street and provides not only a charming Victorian backdrop but also plenty to see and do, including excellent shopping and the chance to rest at one of the English style pubs like The Olde Angel Inn.

One of the oldest golf courses is also located near the lake. If you are a golf enthusiast you will not want to miss the chance to play a few rounds here.

You can also easily walk to Fort George, which is a Canadian National Historic Site. During the War of 1812, the area served as the main headquarters for the British Army. Take a tour of the officers quarters and the barracks. There is even an evening ghost tour you can take.

I would also recommend you visit Niagara-on-the-Lake museum – it “paints a vivid picture of a town with an abundance of history”. Children can explore the galleries with the aid of a Children’s Guide to the Museum. The Museum building is fully accessible on the ground floor for visitors with needs. Handouts are available in a number of languages. They also provide Braille handouts for the visually impaired.The museum also conducts a walking Tour of the “War of 1812” of the Town.

If you happen to enjoy theater, you will not want to miss the Shaw Festival. The festival runs from April to November and showcases the works of the well known Bernard Shaw as well as others such as Agatha Christie and Oscar Wilde.

Many Niagara Falls tours include touring wineries and breweries. In fact, the area is quite convenient for touring Niagara on the lake wineries. The Niagara Wine Trail runs nearby, providing the opportunity to visit some two dozen wineries and vineyards while you are in the local area.
