Chateau des Charmes Wines

Chateau des Charmes Wines

Things to do - general

Château des Charmes was founded in 1978 by Paul Bosc, a fifth generation French winegrower. Paul and his young family arrived in Niagara in the 1960’s with the idea that growing our own grapes was the best way to make fine wine. More than ever, we believe in this Estate Winery model and we make our wine only from grapes we’ve grown ourselves.

We believe we are custodians of the land. From the beginning we have been committed to using sustainable practices and are charter members of Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario. Paul and his team are meticulous. They use modern science and a lot of TLC to coax the best out of every vine. And with more than 30 vintages in our vineyards we think we now know which varieties grow best in which spot. But there is always more to learn. We believe our groundbreaking research with unique grape varieties will blaze a trail to the future of our industry.

Balance. Finesse. Structure. These are some of the words used to describe our wines. We would add food friendly and age worthy. We hope you will call them delicious.

Our premium single vineyard wines are a reflection of where they were grown. St. David’s Bench Vineyard wines are elegant with signature minerality. Just across the street, the Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard gives us wines that are bold and complex. Our Estate Bottled series of wines use high quality grapes from all four vineyard sites to craft wines that are consistent from vintage to vintage.

For many people white wine is how they first start to learn about the world of wine. In general they are low in tannin and often thought to be for “beginners” or what you “graduate” from when you learn to appreciate red wine. But for many experienced wine lovers, white wine is an exploration of a wide range of flavours; from juicy citrus in Riesling to more exotic lychee notes in Gewürztraminer. They can be oaked like our Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, Estate Bottled or unoaked like Chardonnay Musqué; relatively simple like Aligote, St. David’s Bench Vineyard to more complex like ‘Old Vines’ Riesling, Estate Bottled; or easy drinking now Sauvignon Blanc to age-worthy like Chardonnay, St. David’s Bench Vineyard. We are delighted to have a broad range of award-winning white wines for you to try. We hope you find at least one that will become your new “house wine”.

Cool climate wine regions are known for producing red wines that are balanced, elegant and structured. Our reds are often described exactly that way. We are fortunate to have our two premium vineyards; Paul Bosc Estate Vineyard and St. David’s Bench Vineyard, located in one of the warmest sub-appellations in the Niagara peninsula, the St. David’s Bench. This is why in most years we are able to achieve true grape maturation needed to make quality red wines. In the years when we feel Mother Nature didn’t provide the necessary conditions to make our top reds, we are not afraid to declassify. We would much rather you be delighted with a wine that overdelivers at $19.95 than be disappointed with a $40.00 wine that wasn’t up to our quality standards.
