Philosophy

Central to our philosophy at Strewn is the belief that all great wine starts in the vineyard and we work with nature to produce the best wine possible. We are commited to producing premium wines made from grapes grown in the Niagara Peninsula.

What is Terroir?

Terroir is an expression of a sense of place. It is the unique aspects of vineyards: the soil, sunlight, the breeze that keeps grapes dry, a moderating lake-side climate, low-yields, quality, and the influence of passionate winemakers.

Winemaker

In 2011, winemaker Marc Bradshaw joined the Strewn team. Originally from Queensland, Australia, Marc’s background includes a wine-related PhD and hands-on experience in South Africa, France, Germany, Australia and Canada. Marc has been a resident of Niagara-on-the-Lake for the past decade. He takes a very taste-driven approach to winemaking and what he loves best is “the different opportunities and challenges we face each year in making great wines”.

Winemaking Style

Strewn’s winemaking style – with its dedication to expressing the best Niagara’s terroir has to offer – is best described as elegantly crafted wines to be enjoyed on their own or in their natural place at your dinner table.

The Strewn “style” emphasizes the flavours the grapes bring to the wine, supported by the aromas and tastes that develop through wine making. Our wines are made more in the classic European style than the soft fruit driven style from some new world wine regions. Strewn wines have tannin and acidity, which produce the refreshing quality that makes a wine a great accompaniment for food.

“Noble” Vinifera Grape Varieties

At Strewn, we focus on a limited number of classic grape varieties that have been revered in winemaking for centuries. Our red wines are made from three traditional grapes of the Bordeaux region of France: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our whites wines come from Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Blanc grapes. In addition, we grow Vidal, a French hybrid grape for one of our Icewines and Select Late Harvest. We also created the Niagara region’s first barrel fermented Riesling Icewine, which has become an international award winner.

Vintage Variation

We look to retain the quality of the grapes while we develop the character of each wine. We also recognize “vintage variation” – differing weather each year – results in a different wine. Red wines vary more year to year than white wines. In hot dry years we make more intense, deep, tannic reds that need time in the cellar to become smooth and enjoyable. In the cooler, wetter years the wines are lighter, smoother, fruitier and ready to drink sooner. We only make Strewn Three, our flagship red wine, in years where the grapes are of superior quality, and the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot varies with the vintage.

In the Cellar

Our Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc varieties of wine are made only in stainless steel tanks to retain the flavours of the grape and reflect the terroir and vineyard management. With other varieties, we use Canadian, French and American oak barrels to add complexity and nuances of flavour. With reds, the barrel aging has a key role in smoothing the tannic grip from the young wines.

How To Find Us
We're easy to find, just a 50-minute drive from Buffalo and a 90-minute drive from Toronto.
From the QEW, take Exit 38/Exit 38B (Niagara-on-the-Lake) and follow the signs towards town. Turn left at the traffic lights at Four Mile Creek Road in Virgil (about 9 kilometres/6 miles from the QEW). Continue along Creek Road until it ends at Lakeshore Road (about a five minute drive). Turn left and you'll see Strewn on your left.

If you're coming from the Old Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, take Mississauga Street (the main road into town) and turn right at Mary Street (the first traffic lights). Mary Street becomes Lakeshore Road; turn into the second driveway after Four Mile Creek Road. Strewn is a five-minute drive from the corner of Mississauga and Mary.

Our Heritage

Situated just outside the historic Old Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Strewn offers a wonderful selection of wine and culinary experiences - all at one stop!

The property has roots in the community that go back nearly 70 years when it was home to the Niagara Canning Company. Started to provide local farmers with a means of processing their fruits and vegetables, the cannery employed more than 200 people during its heyday in the 1940s. As eating habits changed and imported fresh foods became more readily available in the 1960s, the cannery closed down and used as a warehouse.

In 1997, the original buildings were extensively rebuilt to create the visitor centre at Strewn. Today, we are thrilled to have a unique Niagara destination that showcases wine, one of the most important local products, along with Niagara cuisine. The 10-acre property contains a vineyard set beside neighbouring peach orchards, with grapes planted on the flat portion and on the slope down to Four Mile Creek.

The Winery

Strewn is open year round and visitors can taste wines (most only available at the winery) in our attractive Tasting Room open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Main Tasting Bar offers a selection of our more 'approachable' wines while the Terroir Bar features Tasting Flights, limited edition and pre-release wines.

As well as offering quality wines to enjoy on their own or in their natural place at your dinner table, Strewn offers a number of experiences to engage your senses and increase your wine knowledge. These include educational seminars on select grape varieties, conducted tasting sessions, special hands-on events and Winemaker's Dinners.

Restaurant

OLiV Tapas Bar & Restaurant

OLiV Tapas Bar & Restaurant is now at Strewn. The dining room which overlooks Four Mile Creek has been totally refurbished in a style that pays homage to the building's roots.

Under the direction of Chef Robert Webster, the kitchen delivers beautifully flavoured small plates (tapas), shared plates and full entrees. It's continental fusion cuisine at its best.
